David Bilbrey Memorial Marathon PledgePage

This may surprise you, but all of these individuals will be running the Marine Corps Marathon here in Washington, DC this coming October 30th. We are doing this for two reasons: first, running a marathon has been on each of our “To Do in Life” list for some time. Second, and perhaps more personally, we are running in memory of our close friend, David Bilbrey.

In order to make our participation in the Marathon possible, we have entered into a rigorous, six-month Training Program – established in David’s memory – that will benefit the American Lung Association of Virgina. We feel that our involvement in this event will help not only the organization, but also will have a positive impact on those suffering from lung diseases.

Last Thanksgiving, we lost David to one of those diseases. Though he lived with asthma all his life, none of us knew just how serious a struggle David had faced. Although we all had seen David use his inhaler, he was a responsible asthma sufferer and understood what would trigger an attack. He took his medications every night and knew what he needed to do to manage his disease.

Nevertheless, David suffered a massive asthma attack in the middle of the night while he was home for Thanksgiving. From what we understand, it occurred so quickly that David never had time to reach for his medication or even call for help.

Losing David to a disease like asthma was shocking. Though none of us had heard of people actually dying from asthma attacks, as it turns out, asthma kills over 5,000 people every year in the United States. More research into this disease is desperately needed, so we created the David Bilbrey Memorial Marathon Team to help raise money for that purpose.

It is for this reason that each of us have committed to raise at least $2000 by September 30th. We are asking for your support to help us reach that goal. Any donation you can make to help us meet this goal will be most appreciated! May we suggest, however, a minimum contribution of $26 (that’s a buck a mile!)?

This program is certainly the most arduous physical challenge that many of us have ever faced. But, we cannot think of a better way to honor the memory of David by contributing to other people in need who can benefit from additional asthma research.

We each sincerely thank you for supporting us in this undertaking. Both the people at and the people served by the American Lung Association of Virginia thank you as well.

Yours,
Team TBD
